Why “Class 1” matters
Most hobby engravers contain a Class 4 laser – which the FDA describes as an eye and skin hazard from direct or reflected light and a possible fire hazard. A fully enclosed machine with interlocks can be rated Class 1 overall, meaning the laser light stays inside during normal use. That’s why enclosed machines are the usual choice for kitchens, spare rooms and classrooms. You still need ventilation for smoke and fumes.

1. Creality Falcon A1 10W – cheapest enclosed

See WeCreat VisionAlso consider: Bambu Lab H2D
If you also want a 3D printer, the Bambu Lab H2D Laser Edition is rated Class 1 overall and takes a 10W or 40W laser module, with a smaller laser area than the machines above. See our Bambu Lab H2D laser review.
Enclosed vs open-frame
Open-frame machines like the Sculpfun S30 series or Creality Falcon2 22W give you a larger area for less money, but you’ll need wavelength-rated glasses and a safe space. Compare more options in best laser engraver for beginners and laser engraver prices.
Key takeaways
- An enclosed Class 1 machine contains the laser light, so you don't need safety glasses during normal operation – the main reason to choose one for a home, classroom or shared space.
- Enclosed diode machines now start under $500: the Creality Falcon A1 10W was $466 on sale and WeCreat's Vista $590.
- For cutting thicker wood, the Falcon2 Pro (from $899; up to 22 mm basswood at 60W) and WeCreat Vision Pro ($1,920; 25 mm basswood) are the strongest enclosed options we found.
- An enclosure doesn't remove smoke: you still need to vent outdoors or use a fume extractor.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need safety glasses with an enclosed laser engraver?
Not during normal operation of a Class 1 enclosed machine with the lid closed – Creality and WeCreat both say no goggles are needed. Follow the manufacturer's manual, and never defeat the lid interlock.
Is an enclosed laser engraver worth the extra cost?
If you'll engrave indoors around other people, pets or children, usually yes. Enclosed machines also contain noise and some smoke. Open-frame machines give you a bigger working area for the money.
What's the cheapest enclosed laser engraver?
Among the brands we checked, the Creality Falcon A1 10W at $466 on sale (regular $599).
Can an enclosed laser engrave tumblers?
Yes, with a rotary. WeCreat says its Vista uses a FlipLaser design to engrave 40oz tumblers inside the enclosure, and WeCreat's Rotary Pro supports full-wrap 40oz tumblers on the Vision and Vision Pro.
